What your investment in Vox Dance Theatre means:

Vox Dance Theatre is a year-round artistic and organizational endeavor. The company is deeply committed to its growing future as a local and international artistic presence. With your support, we produce annual seasons, travel to national and international festivals and booking conferences, and perform at non-profit events. We present high quality dance as ambassadors of Los Angeles and the United States.

The following is an outline of the regular expenses we incur at our current level of activity, and how your money will be spent:

Although VDT enjoys three hours of free rehearsal space per week with a space grant from Loyola Marymount University, that is only half of our regular rehearsal schedule. Twelve hours per month of rehearsal space at Church in Ocean Park costs $2400 per year.
Although we try to pay dancers for as many performances as possible, we have been unable to pay even a rehearsal stipend for more than a year. A stipend that only covers the cost of gasoline comes to $50 per month for each dancer, or $3500 per year.
Theater rentals can be prohibitive. Tickets sales offset but rarely cover the cost of rental and associated labor costs (stage crew, technical directors, light & sound operators, etc.). The average cost of a two-night run in a proscenium theater is $5000.
Most costumes cost money to design and construct, purchase or rent, and often must be dry-cleaned. Costume-related expenses average about $2500 per year.
Although the dancers paid their own airfare, room and board to participate in Toronto's fFIDA International Dance Festival last year, these costs are extremely difficult for the dancers to bear. Travel expenses can range from $1000 to $5000 per year, conservatively.
Although the wonderful music used in our repertoire is often taken for granted, music license fees must legally and ethically be paid to the composers and their publishers. License fees average $600 per year.
Although Artistic Director Sarah Swenson designs all the publicity herself, advertising the company and its activities with our website, brochures, flyers, postcards and promotional DVDs, as well as applying to festivals and conferences, is expensive. Printing, DVD/Video duplication, website maintenance, application fees, and postage average $2500 per year, conservatively.
